In smash/slash/trash, the 2014-15 CA Theatre Company tackles a host of real-life incidents in which artworks have been attacked, defaced, or destroyed. Consider Laszlo Toth's infamous 1972 assault with a hammer on Michelangelo's marble Pieta in St. Peter's Basilica; recent graffiti on Delacroix's magnificent Liberty Leading the People by 9/11 conspiracy theorists; or Chinese dissident artist Ai Wei Wei's deliberate smashing of a priceless Han Dynasty vase. The Company uses news reports, original poetry, and stylized movement to investigate a wide range of motives and responses, which are ultimately collaged together into a fascinating performative exploration of destruction-as-creation, protest, madness, & redemption.
